Adjoining the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, on its South Westerly border, the Borough of Fulham is a fantastic residential area with all the benefits of its neighbour but at a fraction of the cost.
Originally Fulham, from the Saxon fullen (meaning water fowl) and ham (meaning river), was a marsh given to the Bishop of London over 1300 years ago where Fulham Palace was built (Bishops Park). More recently the area became a market garden supplying the City of London. It was made up of a group of small villages and a few large Houses, Hurlingham House being one of the last to survive. The Victorians developed Fulham from east to west and the architecture reflects this with houses around Walham Grove, Barons Court and West Kensington being indistinguishable from those of the Royal Borough but slowly changing to the later bay fronted terraces and mansion blocks the further you travel west.
Fulham is made up of quite defined areas, the most salubrious are the roads surrounding Parsons Green, the Hurlingham Club and the area known as the Peterborough Estate although the ‘Alphabet Streets’ of Bishops Park, with their larger gardens have gained parity in desirability. However there are houses of all shapes and sizes to be found from £500,000 to £10,000,000. As well as many conversion flats there are also some wonderful mansion blocks around Hurlingham, Bishops Park and in particular to the north around Queens Club Gardens and Barons Court. To the south there are some spectacular riverside apartments including Imperial Wharf.
